11/13/2022 0 Comments How to use contax s2Not having used any lenses older than those in myġ950's folders, I am uncertain that the Contax lenses will be significantly better, or at least have a uniquely different signature, than my present 35mm gear that would justify the expense and potential trouble of finding suitable lenses and possibly repairing them and the camera. I will mull it over in the next day or so and then decide. Understandably, I am cautious about dipping my toe into the pre-war Leica/Contax rangefinder pool. I would say,as long as it is in good shape and working correctly then yes, they are very good rangefinders, they had a better rangefinder than Leica's, a very long base that made it one of the most accurate around, as far as lenses go, those made for the Kiev rangefinder are pretty good lenses and will fit and work well, they are direct copys of the pre war contax lenses, I use russian lenses on my Leica and Canon rangefinders and find then execeletnt, the early Kievs are Contax cameras in every way but name as the soviets had control of the Zeiss factory in East germany and shiped the whole line, machinery, everything needed to make Contax's, and so many parts that for quite a while the Kiev's were made from contax parts, the only thing different was the name label, they also took most of Carl Zeiss's tecnichians to set the line up in Kiev, They started to drift back in the early fifties, the kiev/contax line being set up, and that is where Carl Zeiss, the lenses makers, only camera line came from, the Werra range, but that is another story, so if you can get a Contax R/F then go for it, assuming that you like the idea of using a R/F, personally I prefer them to slr's ao much that for 35mm I never use anything else, then keep your eyes open for some contax/kiev lenses, also, for anything other than 50mm you will need a viewfinder I use a turnit from Voightlander, it covers everything from 35mm to 135, which is as much as you would want to go with a RF, but others are around and not that expensive, and I have used a contax, the biggest mistake I ever made was to sell it, but it was at a time when money was tight, and a classic car was calling to me to own and show itīrock, Richard - thank you for the insight.
